Craft Beer Freight Types
Full Truckload (FTL)
- The total weight of the load should be 45,000 pounds (max).
- Fits up to 52 stackable pallets or 26 non-stackable pallets (48×40”) or 25 pallets, 56”x44” pallets on a plated trailer.
- You pay for the whole truck.
- One truck will deliver the load directly from Point A to Point B.
Less Than Truckload (LTL)
- Shipment must be less than 10 linear feet.
- Weight must not exceed 10,000 pounds. (Exceptions can apply)
- Transit times are slower than FTL and always an estimated transit time. Estimated transit time is calculated in business days and does not include weekends or holidays.
Dry Van Freight
- No refrigeration unit.
- Ideal for shipping delicate loads or freight that must be shipped in a closed box.
- Majority of dry van trailers are 53 feet long, 8.6 feet wide, 9.6 feet tall, and can typically haul a maximum weight of 45,000 pounds.
- Transit times are slower than FTL and always an estimated transit time. Estimated transit time is calculated in business days and does not include weekends or holidays.
- Usually fits approximately 26 standard shipping pallets.
- Can be less expensive than a reefer trailer.
Reefer Freight
- Ideal for shipping products that require temperature control including finished beverage.
- Typically are 53 feet long, 8.6 feet wide, 9.6 feet tall, and can haul between 42,000 to 44,000 pounds.
- Most are required to carry less weight because the empty trailer weighs more than a dry van due to the insulation and refrigeration unit.
- This generally costs more than dry van freight shipping for beer and beverages but often is the best option.
- Reefer trailers are also used in winter months to keep products from freezing.
Rail Freight
- Can be the lowest cost option for distances over 2000 miles.
- Not the most secure option for finished products or fresh ingredients, such as hops, malt, or fruit as rail often involves rougher rides with more volatile temperatures.
- Major lines run coast to coast seven days a week.
- If rail is the best option for your shipment, Brew Movers is able to secure lower rates with big-name companies.
- If time isn’t of the essence, rail is a cost-effective way to ship beer and beverages.
Flatbed Freight
- Used to transport cargo (such as brewery equipment and tanks) that can’t be loaded or unloaded from a dock, does not fit into standard truck trailer dimensions, or does not require the enclosure of a dry van.
- Allows for cranes and forklifts to load and unload cargo from all angles.
- Standard flatbed trailers are 48-53 feet long, 8.5 feet wide, and can accommodate a freight height of 8.5 feet. Typically, they have a maximum freight weight of 48,000 pounds and up to 65,000 pounds with extra axles.
- Step deck trailers are designed with a lowered deck to transport tall cargo that exceeds a flatbed trailer’s legal height limit. They range from 48 to 53 feet in length, are 8’6” wide, and are permitted to transport cargo with a maximum weight of 48,000 pounds.
- Conestoga trailers are flatbed trailers with a roll-over tarp for protection. They’re versatile and easily loaded/unloaded from the sides. Two flatbed sizes are available, 48 and 53 feet. In general, they are 8′ 4″ wide by 96″ high and have a weight capacity of 44,000 pounds.
- Lowboy trailers can carry heavy equipment and machinery since these trailers can be lowered to their ramp. It has a maximum length of 24 feet and a height of 18 to 24 inches. They can transport a maximum freight weight of 40,000 pounds (with two axles) and up to 80,000 pounds with extra axles.
- RGN trailers can be detached and lowered to the ground for easy loading and unloading of cargo. They have a maximum length of 29 feet, width of 8’6” feet, and height of 11’7” feet. RGN trailers can accommodate up to 42,000 pounds.
- Double drop trailers are designed to carry tall loads, with their flatbeds only 18 inches off the ground below the trailer axles. Typically, they are 48-53 feet long, 8-8.5 feet wide, and can haul between 40,000 to 80,000 pounds.

Brew Movers is the best in the business. Got hired on with my company with little knowledge in truckload shipping and LTL. Maria and Laura taught me everything I know today! They are the best! Both have pulled off some real magic, getting recovery trucks when things go wrong is never a problem for them! Love this company!
